Rushing a Professional Business Fraternity 301 (As Told by Childish Gambino)

In another unlikely combination, we have a few words from Childish Gambino or Donald Glover and some guidance/tips on rushing a professional business fraternity.

If you haven’t yet, check out what Drake has to say on the topic here and here, they’re oldies but goodies and we don't want to hurt Drake’s feelings by skipping over him. Cover the basics, then come back.

I know I’m not perfect, but I am original.
We don’t have a rubric you must follow or a shape or mold you must fit in, there is no perfect or ideal rushee. The most common question I get is something along the lines of “what do you look for in a rushee?” ...YOU! In the time we interact, I am looking to get to know you and understand you in order to determine if I want to call you my brother.
Tip: You should have an answer to the (dreaded) question, “tell me about yourself” that expands to cover more than your name, major, and where you are from.

What do a cappella, business and South Africa have in common? Taylor Brock of course! Taylor is one of Alpha Kappa Psi’s most compassionate and kind-hearted brothers. She came to the University of South Carolina from Inman, S.C. to pursue a degree in public relations and rushed AKPsi in the spring of 2015. She is also a part of Dance Marathon and Alpha Delta Pi and spent a summer abroad in South Africa!

It’s the revival tour. But if you haven’t yet, check out my first post on Rushing a Professional Business Fraternity 101 (as told by Drake).

Back now? Here’s five tips on rushing a professional business fraternity, straight from VIEWS.

1. “The only thing I did to get here was put the work in.”
Rush is effort. Rush is work. Just like any class, you are going to have to put in work. Do your research; check out who we are nationally and at USC, what our core values are, what we have been up to, etc. You put in what you want to get out, and it is easily recognizable when a rushee puts in the time and effort to learn more about us.

Traditional Fraternity and Sorority recruitment is one thing. Networking is another. Put the two together and you get some weird hybrid that could only half explain what rushing a professional business fraternity is like. So in the same spirit of combinations I took my own experience from rushing in the spring of 2015, being on the other side of the rush process in the following fall, and the wise words of Drake in order to help provide some insight on this week.

1. “Think before you come for the great one”
Alright. We get it. Alpha Kappa Psi is pretty great. Just check out the rest of this blog to see why. But really evaluate why you, you specifically, are rushing this week. Rush is a big commitment. Alpha Kappa Psi is a big commitment. Why do you want to be a part of it? What do you hope to gain, to give?

AKPsi Pushed Me Out of My Comfort Zone

This semester I am in Charlotte, North Carolina,  interning for Grant Thornton LLC. I can honestly say that I wouldn't  be here if it were not for Alpha Kappa Psi.

I am in my second week of my internship and have been receiving feedback about myself when I went through interviews. Many of my interviewers mentioned my strength in holding a conversation. As someone who is naturally shy and super uncomfortable with speaking in front of people, I would have never guessed that talking would have been a strength of mine.

How AKPsi Helped Me Connect

One of the best feelings is walking into a room and seeing familiar faces. It’s an even better feeling to walk into an interview and have an automatic connection with the hiring manager. This past semester, I handed my resume to a recruiter who then stated, “oh, I’m an AKPsi too!

In most pitches to get you to join a business fraternity you will hear things like, “We can help you with your resumé!” or “You can practice your interview skills!” and those are both definitely true. However, here are five even better reasons why you need to join AKPSi...

Working at the Chamber

Some words from Brother Drew Bottimore
I've been fortunate enough to have had a number of internships over the past few years. They have all been rewarding in different ways, but the job I had this past summer was especially enjoyable and helpful in terms of career development and direction.

I interned for the international arm of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, primarily helping with the establishment of two country-specific initiatives, geared towards increasing market access and investment for American companies and their subsidiaries operating in Eastern Europe. I not only had the privilege of building relationships with incredible people, but this experience also solidified my interest in going into the international affairs and global strategy side of business.

I very rarely find people as big-picture-minded and career development-oriented as my brothers in AKPsi, especially in college. Mark Twain once said, "The secret to getting ahead is getting started." By surrounding myself with people like my brothers, I have been both inspired and enabled to "get started."
